Rapidly rising from obscurity in 1989, unisex denim label G-Star Raw gained recognition for its distinctive design innovation and engineering. In 2016, Pharrell Williams gained co-ownership of the Dutch brand, as its collaboration with London-based designer Aitor Throup took shape. In the resulting series of menswear capsule collections, entitled Raw Research, Throup explores the life of a denim garment as binary, exhibiting this polarity through the use of untreated and discolored Italian selvedge fabric. Available in contrasting indigo and bleached denim, the brand’s signature modular designs are created exclusively by the Raw Research laboratory in Amsterdam. Including nods to iconic G-Star styles such as the 3D tapered jeans and bomber jackets, the edited capsule boasts outerwear and accessories all in the brand’s groundbreaking denims, and a range of innovative footwear.
