With an early life spent devoted to the study of classical ballet, Tokyo-based designer Chika Kisada’s affinity for billowing tulle creations should come as no great surprise. Following her onstage successes, Kisada turned her focus to fashion in 2007, ultimately launching her namesake womenswear brand in 2014. The emphatic femininity of the label’s tutu-reminiscent dresses and delicate blouses is thrown into unexpectedly sophisticated equilibrium when spliced with tough leather motorcycle jackets and classic cotton t-shirts. Using contrasting textures and storm-dark colorways, Kisada fuses the seemingly disparate universes of balletic tradition and punk-rock irreverence into an idiosyncratic yet dynamic whole. Gossamer-light tulle and smooth satin are treated to asymmetric ruching, voluptuous pleats, and frayed edges, resulting in dramatically sculptural forms that radiate undone allure.
