Fumito Ganryu

After honing his forward-thinking aesthetic and adroit craftsmanship at Comme des Garçons, Fumito Ganryu’s celebrated medley of streetwear, workwear, and high fashion fully comes to form under his independent namesake label. The Fukuoka-bourne designer's much-anticipated label debuted at Pitti Uomo 94 following his decade-long stint at the avant-garde Japanese powerhouse, where he worked as a patternmaker under the likes of Junya Watanabe and developed his own diffusion line under the brand. Fumito Ganryu acts as a conduit for the designer’s explorations into the relationship between nature and the city—synthetic, technically-charged fabrics are offset by traditional Japanese techniques of natural indigo-dying. Described as ‘conceptual wear for the 21st century,’ the label’s progressive designs are challenging but wearable: contemporary tropes are tooled with playful details to produce a finished product that is equal parts recognizable yet wholly unexpected, providing an alternative option to the modern casualwear landscape.
