Veilance creative director Taka Kasuga once described the brand as “high performing architecture that looks good and moves with your body.” When living in a concrete jungle, it makes sense to fortify oneself, to dress in a way that helps you adapt to the immovable surroundings of towers and asphalt. Founded over 10 years ago as a companion to preeminent outerwear brand Arc’teryx, Veilance is designed not for scaling mountains, but for navigating and responding to urban environments. And finally, the ultimate city-traversing uniform is available for women, too.

Toronto-based photographer Othello Grey documented four inspiring creatives in their element wearing Veilance FW21 and we asked each of them to describe what city living means to them. From a florist arranging flowers, to a cyclist on their commute, to a musician in the studio, it’s easy to see the supreme quality of Veilance at work in the city.

Jaime McCuaig, Florist:

City living means connection. There is a heightened level of opportunity for sharing, generosity, kindness, ideas...everything that requires a charge. The city is chemistry and electricity. I find the buzz and the closeness completely overwhelming and completely inspiring.

When I think of city living, I see streets and sidewalks. It's a place where you can benefit from random strangers engaging in a high-density setting. Walking, biking, and arts and culture are all encouraged in good cities. It is a place of diversity and liberty.

Alyssa Alikpala, Artist:

City living is experimenting and playing inside and out, whether in conventional or alternative spaces. The energy is dynamic and conditions are ever changing — the pace, the sounds, the sights, the scents; there’s always something to notice.

Jonah Yano, Musician:

City living, in a place as dense as Toronto, is a way to participate in the entire spectrum of social and political pitfalls and successes all at once. It's about looking some of the worst consequences of living in this capitalist nightmare dead in the eyes and trying to understand how to make the corner of the world I live in slightly better. it's also about understanding who my community is, who is most vulnerable, and who is equipped to uplift those of us most at risk.
