In the context of pop songs, we’re used to hearing “no games”: that they're foolish, toxic, destined for loss and something to quit. At some point these lyrics become lessons, and many of us forget how to play. At our jobs, we’re on deadlines. At home, we’re hypnotized by our phones. It’s no fun.
We have another proposal: it’s time to play more. We want to celebrate games and play in all of its abundant forms. Build an imaginary world with toys. Cosplay. Set up a dominoes game on the sidewalk. Collect Pokémon cards. Go head-to-head. Your brain might be trained to resist, but your gut will welcome the chance to let go.
We sent photographer Emily Lipson and stylist Ian McRae to visit game fanatics of all ages, documenting their genuine love for Minecraft, PlayStation, GameBoy, streaming, and more. Let’s take their cue and indulge in some friendly competition. Varying skill levels welcome—in this game, we’re all winners!
