The SSENSE Guide
to British Brands

Britain has a long sartorial history, stretching from Savile Row to underground raves. Here are more than 40 fashion brands that crystalize the UK’s range.

Counted among the world’s biggest industrial leaders since the eighteenth century, Britain has had ample time and opportunity to cultivate a thriving fashion scene. But beyond the practical capability of producing garments, the most important factor in becoming an international fashion hub is culture. Stretching from the sharp tailoring of Savile Row to the loose-fitting, sportswear-fueled dance floors of speed-garage raves, British clothing brands exist across the entire style spectrum.

It’s this range of cultural touchpoints that has made British life a focus of luxury collections in recent seasons. A noticeable spike in interest from an international audience signals that British subcultures—and, in turn, UK clothing brands—are at a peak right now. For Brits, though, this changes nothing. Brands like Burberry, Wales Bonner, Fred Perry, and others represent authentic British viewpoints and have, in some cases, for centuries; they’re ingrained in the cultural makeup of the island nation, international celebration or not.

While new powerhouses like South Korea have experienced meteoric rises in the past decade or so, British clothing brands offer a kind of range in style and experience that few other countries can rival. To illustrate that point, this list features 48 of the best UK clothing brands, from new designers like Olly Shinder to storied houses like Burberry.
