Copenhagen is fast establishing itself as the world’s fifth fashion city. Alongside New York, London, Milan, and Paris, Copenhagen Fashion Week is now attracting the industry’s most influential editors and buyers, all of whom are on the lookout for the region’s next big thing.

Copenhagen is not the only city in Scandinavia that’s holding the spotlight. In recent years, emerging designers HODAKOVA, LISA YANG, TOTEME, and Feben have put Stockholm—and Sweden more broadly—on the map. These buzzy brands are building on the well-respected legacy of Acne Studios and Our Legacy, both of which are known for superior quality and minimalist design. It’s a shift that’s helped by the Swedish Fashion Council, which is known for mentoring new designers and offering them support aimed at optimizing their business strategies, finances, branding, and production.

The lineup of more than 30 Scandi-led brands at SSENSE is further proof of how the market is growing. Among the more recent Nordic additions to SSENSE’s roster are fast-rising designer Nicklas Skovgaard, known for renaissance-inspired woven garments and nostalgic drop-hem dresses, and HODAKOVA, which has risen to prominence for garments made from “converted goods” like spoons, belts, and watches.

Scandinavian fashion has a long history of prioritizing function and practicality. Often described as utilitarian in both design and quality, the breadth of creativity coming from the region is a testament to the remarkable range of talent. Some designers are focused on creating long-lasting classics, while their peers perfect their take on ruching to create sculptural, three-dimensional pieces. Others, still, are shifting their focus to building and scaling responsible brands with a small carbon footprint and even less waste. After all, Copenhagen Fashion Week is the first of its kind to implement strict sustainability requirements—like reusing all samples and exercising due diligence in supply chains to avoid labor rights violations—that brands must adhere to in order to show their collections with the foundation.

The Scandinavian propensity for design—alongside ample opportunity for mentorship, collaboration with, and investment in new, local talent—have created the perfect conditions for Nordic brands to thrive. As SSENSE continues to amplify the work of Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian designers, it takes a closer look at the brands shaping the course of Scandi fashion on the global scene.
