When last we saw Wendy—the messy and anxious art school anti-heroine created by Walter Scott—she had just received her M.F.A and was traipsing around Montreal to test out a pair of coveted sneakers. Things did not go so well.
Scott hasn’t been shy about deploying Wendy to level critiques at the art-fashion world. (Despite the unflinching nature of his criticism, in 2020 the New Yorker wrote that “Scott seems to have a lot of love for art school and the kind of experience it allows for.”) And now that our protagonist is a little bit older, but perhaps not much wiser, it is perhaps fitting in this 2025 edition of Market Research that Wendy attempts to hit the club in a pair of tabi boots. Things do not go so well.
