With its experimental fragrances and genderless aesthetic, Toronto label VIGYL redefines the power and purpose of candles. Stephen Michlits founded the label in 2021 as an inclusive response to the binaries of traditional candle culture, wherein candles are most often thought of as accessories of religious observance or stress-reduction devices for women. At VIGYL’s Montreal facility, a soy wax blend is hand-poured into reusable glass vessels inspired by oil drums. A thoughtfully formulated, eclectic range of scents uses rich aromatics such as ylang-ylang, ambrette, and tonka bean. Drawing inspiration from art, design, and community, the label collaborates with queer artists in support of local LGBTQI+ charities. Seeking a place for candles beyond the rituals of wellness and religion, VIGYL offers a clean-burning sensory experience unbound by tradition.
