Mark Cross

One of the United States’ earliest luxury goods labels, Mark Cross was founded in 1845 by entrepreneur Henry W. Cross with the goal of creating the finest leather goods for the era's horse-and-buggy traveler. The brand flourished throughout the 20th century under directorship of Patrick Murphy and son Gerald Murphy, expanding its offering to include leather luggage, cigarette cases, and evening bags. However, a commission from Murphy’s friend Alfred Hitchcock launched Mark Cross firmly into the American cultural canon, its now-iconic Overnight Case appearing on the arm of Grace Kelly in Hitchcock’s Oscar-nominated feature Rear Window. The label’s contemporary staples, the Grace Box, Benchley, Laura, and Harley models, bear premium structured calfskin, python, and alligator leather fabrications reminiscent of Old Hollywood elegance, with rattan renditions of the brand’s essential handbags recalling the glamorous Mediterranean holidays of mid-century expats. Armed with rich heritage and a vast archive of vintage-inspired designs, Mark Cross carries the retro-minimalist appeal of its signature leather handbags into the 21st century.
