Straddling the line between avant-garde phenomenon and fashion label, Brooklyn-based LUAR deconstructs traditional tailoring to favor a flair for the dramatic. Having cofounded cult underground label Hood By Air in the early aughts, Dominican-born, NYC-raised designer Raul Lopez is adept at synthesizing a multitude of cultural touchpoints into a single zeitgeist-defining aesthetic. For LUAR, Lopez blends Dominican flamboyance with a wry downtown sensibility, recasting corporate attire and cotton fleece basics into a visionary line of gender-fluid silhouettes. Unexpected cutouts, straps, and asymmetrical constructions give shirts, coats, and blazers a transgressive edge, while cursive logo embroideries adorn sportswear essentials in pastel tones. LUAR’s subversive ready-to-wear is a celebration of community, culture, and diversity.
