By now you know that trends are mostly dead and that the resounding ethos of getting dressed is to wear what makes you feel the most you. However, more than just putting on that cargo short or picking up that oversize bag, the most powerful form of self expression comes from how you style these items.
The unexpected is expected: Show your skivvies, wear your accessories in reverse, pull down your V-necks, and pull down your sleeves even further. Adding an element of strangeness can make even the most mundane items magical. Here, a handy guide.

Low rise is not just an opportunity to show off those oblique cuts, but also a chance to show off the boxer shorts underneath.

Model wears KNWLS dress, The Row bag, JW Anderson heels, Maison Margiela gloves and Phaidon book.
Forget mini bags. The new way to accessorize is to over-cessorize. Grab a gigantic tote and stuff everything you own in it.

Model wears OPEN YY tank top, 16Arlington skirt and Agent Provocateur briefs.
Any garment can be an opportunity to show a little something. Take a page from the Balenciaga or VAQUERA playbooks and leave skirts undone at the back to reveal a thong—or more.

Model wears Ami Paris socks and JW Anderson mules.
Twee white socks have given way to crazier colors and more eccentric prints. Why don’t you… pair an animal paw shoe from JW Anderson with a cardinal red sock?

Model wears Rick Owens sweater and Balenciaga sunglasses.
Channel Ariana Grande and pull those thin knits well over your thumbs for a moodier feel. Makes taking any phone call seem like a deep confessional.

Model wears LU’U DAN hoodie and Canada Goose hat.
Baseball cap worn regularly? Preppy. Lame. Expected.
Backwards baseball cap? Rule breaker. Rebel. Innovator.
