Summer Plans

What to wear, eat, and read this summer—according to 15 of the coolest people we know.

  • By: Chris Gayomali

Even though it’s been a blistering June, summer doesn’t officially start—at least to our minds—until July. Consider the last few weeks a prelude. So in the event you needed a few recommendations on what to wear, listen to, read, or imbibe in this summer, we asked a couple friends of SSENSE to share what they’ve been feeling.

What are you excited to read this summer?

Aside from the not-Hogwarts wizards YA that I read to fall asleep at night: Working my way through Annie Ernaux’s back catalog at the moment, but I’ve also got Angela Flournoy’s The Wilderness, Damon Young’s That’s How They Get You, and Rob Franklin’s Great Black Hope on my coffee table (and very excited about it). I’m also looking forward to digging into Immemorial by Lauren Markham, an essay published by Transit Books.

Go-to outfit?

DISSH’s wide-leg lace pants paired with an oversized tee—right now I’m alternating between SZA/Kendrick’s concert tee and my Palestinian Poppy tee from Medicinal Plant Index—and comfy Marni rhinestone slippers. And face card, as always, by my girl Soo-Young at SYK Skin.

Album on repeat?

Other than the instrumental jazz that I write to I’m verrrrry curious about the new kwn album. And low-key new Kesha? I think about “Praying” more than a healthy amount. Also! The untitled Hayley Williams project! #BlackPeopleLoveParamore.

Footwear that will get the most mileage?

Tabi loafers and Wales Bonners leopard-print adidas.

Ideal summer beverage?

A yet-to-be-created non-alcoholic drink that’s not sugary but herbaceous and carbonated and CRISP.

Restaurant you’ll spend the most time at?

Restaurants are so effing expensive in New York right now they are not in my dream blunt rotation. But I do keep going by La Mercerie for their INCREDIBLE chocolate chip cookie.

Go-to outfit?

My summer staple is mixing breathable linen with quick-dry tech fabrics. Lately I’ve been pairing a Patagonia Capilene® Cool Daily tee with thrifted HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE linen shorts—it keeps me cool and dry all day in Tokyo’s humidity.

Song of summer?

My song of the summer is Roy Ayers’s “Sunshine (Demo).” I’ve been a fan since my teens, but I only recently discovered this demo—and its warm vibraphone grooves make Tokyo’s summer heat feel a bit more pleasant. Having passed away earlier this year, he’s an artist I’ve grown to love even more as I’ve gotten older.

Vacation plans?

I haven’t set any dates yet, but I’m planning to revisit Chiang Mai and Bangkok—and explore parts of Thailand I’ve never been to. After that, I want to tour Southeast Asia, hitting Vietnam and Indonesia—and hope to connect with locals to collaborate on future projects while I’m there.

A lingerie top turned into a skirt and the other way around from ALL-IN, metallic Prada hairpins, accessorized with red, pink, and plastic details—think toy-store energy meets high-fashion.
