The origins of the iconic Dr. Martens label can be traced back to 1945 when its namesake founder, Dr. Klaus Maertens, developed an innovative air cushion–soled shoe to help with a foot injury. In the decades since, the British label has become a household name, known for its reliable, army- and workwear-inspired designs. Initially worn by blue-collar workers, Dr. Martens was eventually picked up as a favorite among youth subcultures, changing the functional workwear boot into an alt essential. Today, the label has evolved to offer a range of shoe styles, from the original 1460 boot to platform oxfords—all with the signature yellow topstitching at the welt.
