Japanese designer Chitose Abe honed her skills as a pattern cutter for Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo and Junya Watanabe for ten years before launching her own womenswear brand, Sacai. Launched in 1998, the label quickly earned industry acclaim owing to Abe’s technical deftness and supreme ability to seamlessly splice together starkly disparate styles and textures. It was Abe’s years working under Kawakubo that saw her develop an eye for the avant-garde, while also inspiring her to defy sartorial conventions. Aiming to create clothing suitable to any occasion, Abe melds and transforms familiar women’s knitwear, jackets, dresses, trousers, and blouses into novel and challenging design hybrids that interest visually in 360 degrees. Ruffles, patchwork, and asymmetric constructions add intellectual flourish to Sacai’s innovative separates. Leading Japanese manufacturers are commissioned to craft all textiles from scratch, ensuring absolute authenticity and quality.
