Is a mood an emotion? A mood is a vibe, for sure. A mood shifts at a moment’s notice, its catalyst often barely perceptible. The sun goes behind a cloud and a small dread settles in. The sounds of cooking in the next room prompt contentment, a vibrational alignment with the smell of lasagna. At other times, a mood is unshakable.

Some moods dictate actions (frantic cleaning), some are just slight changes in disposition (silence). Some come in short bursts, others last for months. Some moods have blatant faces to match. But does Zoom pick up the complex microexpressions of an unexpected, ecstatic response to the mail’s arrival?

A year spent mostly in isolation, the days melting into a humdrum monotony, with little to break up the day but erratic changes in outlook. You’ve become one with the carpet, the couch. You’ve fantasized about the future, staring off from the edge of the bed. If a temper tantrum happens at 3:46 p.m. in an empty bachelor apartment, does it make a sound? Does pure, hard, petrified boredom qualify as a feeling?

We are now told to resist negativity, to remain positive, but with caution. Be generally optimistic, but not wildly. Track moods in apps, chart calm, free up head space. A mood is something to be traced, tempered, tuned.
