Well-versed in design from a young age, Japan-born Michiko Suzuki was inspired by her tailor grandfather to begin creating clothing. After graduating from Bunka Fashion College and being appointed head designer of Yohji Yamamoto’s Y’s Red Label, Suzuki founded her womenswear brand Nocturne #22 in 2010. Taking its name from Chopin’s “night songs,” the label’s designs are characterized by an underlying darkness. Deconstructed silhouettes, asymmetric hems, and bold details offset immaculately tailored classics including knit cardigans and poplin shirting. Oversized jersey pullovers, hooded dresses, and cloak-like wool coats, all in shades of black, white, and navy, are meant to be draped and layered.
