The oldest fashion house still in operation, Lanvin was founded in Paris in 1889 by 22-year-old milliner Jeanne Lanvin. Her skill at evoking a classically composed sense of femininity soon turned Lanvin into one of France’s premier couture houses, with its focus on elegance as an everyday pursuit establishing a lasting legacy. The label’s ongoing use of rich fabrics and embellishments join quietly unorthodox fabrications in proposing a new vision of contemporary refinement. Ribbons, raw hems, and pearls adorn tailored tweed skirts and jackets, appliquéd sweaters and slip-on sneakers, calf leather handbags, and flowing shift dresses; coats and trousers are boldly and expressively cut. Appointed in 2016, artistic director Bouchra Jarrar brings a subtle yet powerful approach to Lanvin’s womenswear.
