Advancing a never-before-seen view into the artist’s inner workings, Off-White and Louis Vuitton Men’s Artistic Director Virgil Abloh’s new exhibition “CUTTING ROOM FLOOR” Virgil Abloh™ c/o SSENSE comprises a 1:1 recreation of the creative’s home studio, the contents of which have been excised and relocated into the main floor of SSENSE Montréal. Ranging from the commonplace (shoe boxes, a waste bin, a pencil holder) to the extraordinary (notes, sketches, and other artifacts), this curation of Abloh’s personal effects, branded facsimiles, limited edition multiples, and exclusive exhibition memorabilia paints a familiar, although tongue-in-cheek, self-portrait of the multi-disciplinary artist himself. Design drafts, lookbook print-outs, and working materials shine a light on Abloh’s seemingly opaque creative process, while a collection of rarefied literary materials, from glossy photography tomes, conversations, art criticism, and back-issues of venerated periodicals, reveals the designer’s deepest influences. Within the context of “CUTTING ROOM FLOOR”, each object brings a new sense of understanding to the the artist's day-to-day, while playfully keeping the audience at a distance, furthering the myth of Virgil Abloh.
