Beat Culture

For an 18-year-old who only started making music three years ago, Sunik Kim makes experimental alt-pop look easy. After taking up his Beat Culture moniker in 2011 (a name he came up with using a chillwave name generator), Kim released his debut album, Goldenbacked Weaver at the tender age of 16. He prefers to ignore labels, but with his list of key influencers spanning the likes of Gold Panda, Hudson Mohawke, James Blake, Neon Indian, and Shlohmo, you can tell where his sound has acquired its intriguing energy and contemplative mood. In the few years that he's been active, he's been featured on the Creators Project, played at SXSW, and is poised to take the electronic world by storm. For our part, we were taken by his 2012 sophomore album Tokyo/Dreamer, a pop-tinged electronic release to be followed up by his 7" Drifter/Shibuya, slated for January 21st 2014.

SSENSE favorite James Ferraro’s “Intro” provides just that, followed by sounds from Sinjin Hawke, Oneohtrix Point Never, Dirty Beaches, Kode9, Shlohmo, and Andy Stott.
