In 2012 Matériel Tbilisi emerged out of the foundations of Georgia’s oldest retailer, Fashion House Materia. Situated in Tbilisi, the tiny post-Soviet country’s capital, Matériel Tbilisi was established as a platform for showcasing Georgia’s up-and-coming creative talent. Currently working under the label’s moniker are designers Aleksandre Akhalkatisishvili and Lado Bokuchava who, with their draped and minimalist designs, have brought critical acclaim to the premium label. Inspired by the austere environments and Soviet aesthetics of their youth, Akhalkatisishvili and Bokuchava combine streamlined design principles with 1980’s tailoring: oversized blazers, quilted parkas, single-shoulder dresses, and pleated trousers meet intricate button detailing, unusual cut-out accents, and functional self-tie fastenings. Sleek, chic, and unorthodox, each Matériel Tbilisi piece is manufactured in Tbilisi using high-quality materials, with faux-leather and wool fabrics featuring prominently throughout the offering. With its unconventional yet sophisticated approach, Matériel Tbilisi has established itself as a dominant player in the internationally-recognized emerging Georgian fashion scene.
