New York based designer, Laura Lombardi founded her namesake jewelry label in 2010. Growing up in between two culturally diverse milieus, those of New York City and Italy, has informed much of Lombardi’s practice. Her pieces seamlessly combine a modern industrial style with influences drawn from the classical art and sculpture of the past— an aesthetic reflective of the environments in which Lombardi spent her childhood. Chain-link necklaces, interlocking bracelets, and bold hoop earrings are paired with oversized fastenings, braided detailing, and carved accents. Although the pieces arrive in a variety of lengths and sizes, the collection maintains structural unity through its prominent use of gold, as well as through its sculptural characteristics. Known for her chunky yet lightweight pieces, the self-taught designer, who operates out of her Brooklyn studio, handcrafts each piece individually, using repurposed and recycled materials. By making her craft a sustainably responsible one, Lombardi offers a new and exciting approach to the luxury jewelry market. While each piece speaks to an understated opulence, a boldly daring elegance, it is the wearer who ultimately brings to life, or activates, the jewelry’s aesthetic.
