Designer A Sai Ta was born in Britain to a Vietnamese mother and Chinese father—as a boy, Ta’s fascination with fashion was sparked while watching his seamstress mother work and seeing his four sisters dressing up. Ta places his heritage at the forefront of his womenswear label ASAI, alluding to identity, race, and class through a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors. A Central Saint Martins’ graduate, Ta cut his teeth at The Row and YEEZY before launching ASAI in 2017. Revelling in technicolor tie-dye washes, Ta’s eponymous fashion venture immediate garnered cult status for its masterfully executed conceptualization and powerful iconoclast denotation. Expert textile manipulation techniques inspire refashioned versions of classic silhouettes, betokened in the designer’s signature Hot Wok shirt. T-shirts are packaged in Chinese take-out boxes, as one of many nods to his east-meets-west second-generation Londoner heritage. With a tongue-in-cheek philosophy of unsettling the status quo, sophisticated employment of nonconformist, intricate adornments are the driving force behind the brand's designs.
