8 of the best Spring collaborations

We love a good collaboration, and Spring 13 was full of them. This season, designers from all areas of fashion partnered up with fellow designers, as well as with leaders in other creative industries - singers, artists, painters, and photographers all offered up impactful capsule collections showcasing a fusion of aesthetics that work perfectly together.  We take a look back at our favorite collaborations from Spring 13.
Grimes x Saint Laurent /
Before Hedi Slimane was lensing musicians like Daft Punk, Marilyn Manson, and Kim Gordon for his Saint Laurent Music Project, he was forming another crossover between music and fashion, collaborating with Canadian synthpop vocalist, Grimes.  The capsule collection, comprised of five graphic t-shirts, introduced the house’s iconic logo into futuristic, otherworldly sketches designed and hand-drawn by Grimes herself. Inspired by Yves Saint Laurent's own "Love Posters" from the 1970s, the design marked the meeting point between the past and the future. For more on the capsule collection, read our feature about the collaboration.

Robert Geller x Common Projects /
German-born New York menswear designer Robert Geller partnered up with fellow New York-based label Common Projects once again for Spring 13, this time on a range of footwear to complete Geller's menswear collection.  Common Projects' signature stripped-back aesthetic and gold numerical logo print remained present across leather loafers and nubuck high-tops in a distilled version of Geller's Spring palette. The partnership - an extension of their Fall 10 cross-collaboration - continues for Fall 13.

Maison Kitsune x Pernod /
In celebration of the much-anticipated return of Absinthe Pernod, the famous French spirit paired up with French label Maison Kitsune on a capsule collection for Spring 13. The collection included both men's and women's shorts, shoes, crewneck t-shirts, and hats, and featured the label's first ever print, created by designer Lucile Troquet. The playful print seen across both the capsule collection and the special edition Pernod bottle portrays the iconic Kitsune fox alongside colorful anise flowers - the main ingredient in Absinthe. Marni x Rop van Mierlo /
Milan-based designer Consuelo Castiglioni of Marni teamed up with Amsterdam artist Rop van Mierlo to brighten up otherwise basic Spring 13 menswear. Turning dress shirts and t-shirts into the canvas, Marni's whimsical donkey, tiger, and parrot prints are reproductions of watercolors from van Mierlo's self-published book, Wild Animals, which won the Dutch Design Awards in 2010.  For more on Marni's watercolor prints, read our interview with Rop van Mierlo.

Raf Simons x Brian Calvin /
Longtime friends Raf Simons and Brian Calvin joined forces for the designer's Spring 13 menswear collection, one of the season's most coveted "clothing-as-art" collaborations. Calvin lent Simons his famous portraits and beach landscapes - including his acclaimed Killer painting -which Simons then translated into exaggerated graphic prints for neoprene t-shirts, crewneck sweaters, and silk scarves. UNDERCOVER x The Talking Heads /
Tokyo-based designer Jun Takahashi is no stranger to the music scene, having been part of a cover band called the Tokyo Sex Pistols during his youth, and his love of punk is decidedly present in his design ethos for UNDERCOVER. For Spring 13, UNDERCOVER took to new-wave band The Talking Heads, using the group's logo and the original album artwork from their 1983 album Speaking in Tongues, as colorful prints for crewneck t-shirts.  For more on UNDERCOVER, read our interview with Jun Takahashi.

J Brand x Christopher Kane /
Ever since their first partnership in 2010, the collaboration between denimwear label J Brand and designer Christopher Kane has been a winning combination. Continuing to fuse J Brand’s high-quality denim essentials with the imagination of Christopher Kane, the collaboration for Spring resulted in seasonal sorbet hues, crinkled textures, and slim, cropped fits.

JUUN.J x Alex & Felix /
A continuation of Fall 12's partnership, Seoul-based designer Juun J enlisted Swiss photographers Alex Gertschen and Felix Meier, also known as Alex & Felix to provide images for his Spring 13 prints. The prints were reproductions of a staged photography series by the pair, who used real models in their production. Hauntingly beautiful, surrealist portraits dubbed The 13 Queens, the prints became famous last season when JUUN.J showcased them across neoprene sweaters. For Spring 13, the Queens came back, this time across more accessible basic t-shirts. For more on the 13 Queens, read our interview with Alex & Felix.
