After a ten-plus year break from music production, British pop-rock artist David Bowie returns with the release of his music video for The Stars (Are Out Tonight), the second release from his forthcoming album, The Next Day. Directed by Floria Sigismondi with cinematography by Jeff Cronenweth, the video stars Bowie and Tilda Swinton as a well-heeled married couple who lead a quiet life in the suburbs. Things are quickly turned upside-down when a young couple – or a couple of aliens who bear a striking resemblance to Bowie and Swinton – are introduced. From there the story, as well as the cinematography, gets dark and twisted.
Female model Saskia de Brauw plays the young man, while androgynous male model Andrej Pejic plays the woman; a fitting nod to Bowie’s own flirtations with gender-bending. By the end of the six-minute video, Swinton has evolved into Bowie, and the two are shown side-by-side in matching silver lame blazers from Hedi Slimane’s for Saint Laurent.
Styled by Jerry Stafford, Bowie wears a Lanvin dress shirt and an Alexander McQueen trench coat. Swinton wears Raf Simons for Jil Sander, Raf Simons for Dior and a Rick Owens coat.
Bowie’s comeback has thrust him into the spotlight recently, with an entire exhibition at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum entitled David Bowie Is, showcasing over 300 never-before-seen pieces, including photographs, costumes, handwritten lyrics and artwork.
