After a self-described “break up with the Internet” in 2010, Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam moved to India, where she found spirituality through the web: a Google search led her to the discovery of Matangi, a Hindu wisdom goddess who shares her name. The discovery led to the creation of a new album, one that she says is a distillation of this new-found spirituality; of the purity of information, and all that the goddess Matangi represents.
Now, Paris-based fashion house KENZO has teamed up with M.I.A. to soundtrack their Fall 13 runway show, which debuted in Paris on March 3rd. The eight-minute Matangi mix acts as a preview to M.I.A.’s forthcoming album of the same name, and opens with M.I.A.’s signatures: elements of hip-hop, electronica, and world music with high-energy percussion and dynamic basslines, and vocal samples in Hindi.
KENZO, the Japanese-born French label helmed by Opening Ceremony’s Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, presented a Fall 13 collection that focused, as always, on colors and prints. KENZO has a history of forward-thinking show soundtracks; for Spring 13 the label collaborated with Nicolas Godin of AIR, and for Fall 12 they worked with the L.A.-based duo Nguzunguzu, aka Asma Maroof (M.I.A.’s former tour DJ) and Daniel Pineda.
