If you're wondering where you've heard the name Obey City before, it's probably because the hook from "That Molly" got stuck in your head when it appeared on the Melt Records compilation album in March. Sam Obey (pronounced "oh-bee") has been gracing the decks as Obey City since 2008, but the Brooklyn native is a producer at heart. He got his start producing for hip-hop artists and rappers, eventually pursuing a solo career to experiment with weirder production, emotional R&B, club music, and trap-influenced beats. His two-part EP, Champagne Sounds, was a fittingly energetic, bubbly digital release, so we hope the second installment, dubbed Merlot Sounds, is full of hazy, poignant beats. Along with Kuhn and Paul Jones, Obey co-founded Astro Nautico, a Brooklyn imprint that releases music with the same forward-thinking mindset.
Obey City's mix includes his own "Cloud Lust," alongside a host of SSENSE favorites: Ta-Ku, Oneohtrix Point Never, DJ Rashad, Lindsay Lowend, Jaw Jam, and Machinedrum.
