Born in Port Au Prince, Haiti, Kevin Celestin is a Montreal-based DJ and remixer, best known for his reworkings of classic 90s hip-hop and R&B tracks. He began DJing as Kaytradamus in 2006, before recently changing his moniker to KAYTRANADA – a handle he describes as being “more unique” and one that also subtly alludes to his Canadian roots. After the successful release of his debut album Teriphikness in 2010, KAYTRANADA released eight LPs in 2011, including the acclaimed Kaytra da Mouse, Massively Massive, and his collaborative effort with Florida-based experimental trap producer Mr.Mockwell, Mockay. KAYTRANADA’s latest EP, Kaytra Todo, under German label Jakarta Records, and Huh What Where Recordings, dropped in February.
KAYTRANADA’s exclusive mix for SSENSE begins with his signature infusion of 90s R&B, with a languid offering from female R&B trio Sisters With Voices, before pulling in Erykah Baduh’s neo-soul hit I Want You and KAYTRANADA’s own rework of Missy Elliott’s Sock It 2 Me. Grounded in heavy hip-hop beats throughout, the mix features fast-paced juke, rap, and glitch-hop offerings from artists like Jay-Z, Overdoz, Samiyam, and fellow Montrealers High Klassified and Tommy Kruise.
