With over 14 years of production experience to date, Barrett Richards developed the Kastle moniker back in 2009. His persona implies the concept of a fortress, but Kastle’s sound is entirely accessible, fusing hip-hop and R&B with heavy bass, garage and dubstep. 2012 was a big year for the now California-based artist, who released three EPs, including a collaborative effort, Don’t Believe, with fellow bass music producer Jason Burns in September, under Kastle’s own label, Symbols Recordings. Presenting a forward-thinking approach to electronic music, Symbols has worked with notable artists like We Sink and Druid Cloak, both of whom can be found within his exclusive mix for SSENSE. Kastle has slowly been releasing previews of his debut full-length album, set to be released in the coming year.
Kastle’s mix is a melodic fusion of deep house, post-R&B, dubstep and his favored bass music, opening with Gang Gang Dance’s remix of Falty DL’s She Sleeps, an atmospheric piano ballad that evolves into heavier but equally languid electronica. The mix moves on to include Symbols release Inside, from Parisian producer Andrea and Athens-based duo We Sink, along with an unreleased remix of Lana Del Rey’s Summertime Sadness by Canadian producer Ryan Hemsworth, and Sweater Beats’ collaborative effort with Night Slugs’ MORRI$, Need You Around. Kastle’s own productions slip into the mix as well: Without You, a soulful bass music number featuring Miami vocalist Austin Paul, and an exclusive first-play of his track Been Awhile (found at 18:50) provide a preview of his forthcoming.
