Taipei-born Alex Zhang Hungtai, aka Dirty Beaches first full-length LP Badlands dropped in 2011, fusing rockabilly overtones with subtle lo-fi bass lines. Since, the Montreal-based producer has continued to experiment with lo-fi instrumentals and synth-driven beats, including his 2012 7”, Elizabeth’s Theme. His forthcoming double LP, Drifters/Love is The Devil will release under Zoo Music on May 21st, the title track for which touches on the same understated, modulated synth chords and moody atmosphere. Dirty Beaches has also composed and produced soundtracks for films like 2012’sThe Hippo and this year’s Waterpark – a nod to his own passion for film, which often inspires his music. Dirty Beaches will embark on his North American and European tour later this year.
Despite a stripped-back track listing, Dirty Beaches’ exclusive SSENSE mix is full of his signature emotive yet upbeat sound, opening with Valerie Dore’s 1985 track, Get Gloser, before moving on to more upbeat offerings from Lustt, Brain, Nicolas Courtin, and Yannis Rianta.
