Dominic Jones has come a long way since his modest beginnings making jewelry in his kitchen in London. His pieces have graced some of the world’s most graceful necks, Beyonce and Florence Welch included; his work has appeared on the cover of Harper's Bazaar; he’s accessorized Thierry Mugler’s show; he was nominated for the 2012 British Fashion Award for “Emerging Accessories Designer”; he’s a five time New Gen award winner…and all of this in the few short years since he launched his eponymous label in 2009.
A graduate of London’s Sir John Cass School of Art and Design, Jones tried his hand in several undertakings before settling on jewelry. In 2009, backed by his longtime friend Alice Dellal, he launched his debut collection, Tooth and Nail. That collection, which featured leather gloves with gold metal fingernails, claw-shaped rings, and fanged necklaces caught the eye of Anna Wintour, who endorsed the young designer. More attention came when Rihanna wore one of his rings while performing with Kanye and Jay-Z on late night TV.
Perhaps the best personification of Jones’ aesthetic is his business partner, the Brazilian model Alice Dellal. Dellal’s looks echo Jones' work in many ways: both marry darkness with femininity, hardness with romanticism. Jones’ latest collection, which he describes as “sinister, powerful, and elegant” has intricately carved creatures and otherworldly shapes, and names that summon thoughts of witchcraft and mythology: Chimera, mandrake, centaur, banshee. And though his work might be an exercise in the dark arts, it’s no sleight of hand: Jones makes magic.
